As trade tensions rise with the United States imposing a 50 per cent tariff on India and warning countries against buying oil from Russia, global leaders are preparing for a major show of unity. On August 31, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping, and leaders from nearly 20 nations will come together at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit in Tianjin, China. The gathering is seen as a strong message to Washington amid its ongoing tariff war.

PM Modi to Join SCO Summit

China’s Deputy Foreign Minister Liu Bin stated that Russian President Vladimir Putin, Indian PM Narendra Modi, and several other leaders from different countries will participate in the SCO meeting. The event will be held in the Chinese city of Tianjin. It is notable that the two-day summit will also include participation from United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and heads of nine other international organizations.

A joint declaration will be signed

The SCO Summit is being hosted by Chinese President Xi Jinping. During the summit, all SCO member countries may sign a joint declaration. Additionally, all member countries will approve the SCO development strategy and discuss measures to strengthen security and economic cooperation. It is believed that this declaration could deliver a sharp response to America’s tariff policy.

  • President Vladimir Putin – Russia
  • President Xi Jinping – China
  • President Masoud Pezeshkian – Iran

PM Modi’s presence is extremely important: China

China’s Ambassador to India, Xu Feihong, stated on Thursday that PM Modi’s visit to China for the SCO Summit at the end of this month is extremely important for the summit as well as for bilateral relations between the two countries. China’s Ambassador to India, Xu Feihong, said that China attaches great importance to PM Modi’s visit. He added that the PM’s visit to China will not only be a highly significant event for the SCO but also for bilateral relations between the two countries. A working group of China and India is preparing to make this visit successful.

China aims to corner the US

It is noteworthy that through this summit, China will try to demonstrate its power to the United States. Earlier, China’s Deputy Foreign Minister Liu Bin described the SCO meeting as being different from the character of a certain country. Without naming, he referred to the US, saying that some countries want to place their national interests above those of others. This clearly indicates that he was pointing toward the United States. The US President has initiated tariff wars worldwide. Liu claimed that the SCO’s principles are very different from old concepts of “one’s win is another’s loss.” He added that over time, this organization has grown even stronger.
